Start with your workload, not the AI badge
For a private coding assistant or local chat, usable GPU memory, memory bandwidth and a supported runtime matter more than an advertised NPU TOPS figure. A model fitting in memory does not mean it will answer quickly. Image generation, inference and fine-tuning have different requirements.

Three types of memory—not one league table
- System RAM: CPU-accessible working memory. A discrete GPU cannot automatically use all of it at VRAM speed.
- Unified/shared memory: CPU and GPU share a pool, but the operating system, runtime and allocation limits still consume or restrict it.
- Dedicated VRAM: memory on a discrete GPU. CPU offload may let a larger model run, but can change speed substantially.
Check model weights, quantisation, context/KV-cache and runtime overhead together. Parameter counts alone are not buying guarantees; leave space for the operating system and applications.
How we judge value
- Can it run your required software and model format?
- How much memory can the chosen runtime use, with headroom?
- What do comparable measured tests show at your context length?
- What are the cooling, noise, power, portability and warranty compromises?
- What is the exact UK configuration's total cost—not an unrelated starting price?
Cheap hardware with the wrong software support is poor value. So is paying for unused memory, a creative bundle or peak performance that your workload cannot use.
